Talking to Tom
Missionaries get two phone calls home each year - Mothers Day and Christmas Day - for half an hour according to Tom - who naturally checked the rules book.
We called him in the car between home and Warren and Helen's place.
The highlights of the conversation were:
He was hassled and punched by a group of youths on Christmas Eve.
Christmas Day is spent in the flats due to the amount of alcohol leading to violence.
Pigeons are sacred in the Baltic and most Eastern European nations -this is because Pigeon and Dove are the same words, therefore the Holy Ghost descended in a pigeon when Christ was baptised - therefore pigeons represent the Holy Ghost. The story - which sounds apocryphal to me - goes that a missionary took a photo of another missionary kicking a pigeon, put it in to be developed, the press got it and ran it with headlines saying that 'Mormons kick the Holy Ghost; and the missionary was sent home.
Jesse chatted about Hamlet - as you do.
Louisa was in tears - badly - because I took more than my allotted 5 minutes and she thought she might miss out on talking to Tom.
Tom still doesn't have gloves - but he just keeps his hands in his pockets!
Tom really likes his companion - who turns out to be the cousin of a missionary who served in our ward 6 yars ago (Sis Pitts) - said he walks like lightening and works really hard.
Roger told Tom about the Wii and Tom laughed about how the family had fallen apart since he left.
Tom doesn't have too much of an accent - though he thought we all did.
